Asus Striker II Extreme Motherboard 06/04/2008
This review is from: ASUS Striker II Extreme LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 790i Ultra SLI ATX Intel Motherboard
The Striker II Extreme is a good motherboard with loads of extras. A gamers dream! ...It has a REAL reset button on the back of the board that's a real lifesaver. Great BIOS, loads of adjustments and setting available making it easy to swap out RAM, change latency, voltage, timing, & overclock easily. The board is a good stable base that actually "feels" thicker and physically stronger than other boards like the XFX nForce 790i SLI motherboard which I also bought to try against the Asus.
Both boards have good qualities but I eventually decided to stay with the Asus Striker II because of the more versatile BIOS and the more durable board itself... not to mention all the extra options it offers.
I especially like the onboard buttons & switches, etc, they work great & you won't miss having to use those old jumpers at all.
You'll find that you can easily use just about any type of H2O or fan for CPU cooling, and it's already piped & fitted for H2O on the northbridge!
IT'S Too EXPENSIVE!
It's not so much a standard motherboard in as much as it needs to be more manually set-up. Don't rely on the BIOS "Auto" settings. Chances are they're not going to work with your CPU, RAM, etc!!! To get it right, YOU HAVE TO SET EVERYTHING YOURSELF.
If you're not comfortable with making a lot of changes in your BIOS, this board's Not for you!
With a little patience and some trial and error, you can easily update the BIOS and adjust your setting to get everything up and running. Even close settings will get your system up and limping along enough to load your RAID drivers (that is, if you're going to set up a RAID), and install an Operating System, drivers, etc. After a little time, you'll be able to dial it all in and get things a lot more stable & running faster!
So, remember, with this board you're going to need some time (trial & error) to get things adjusted and set just right! It can be very time consuming.
This board's a little picky on the RAM too!
I bought both, the Asus Striker II Extreme motherboard and the XFX nForce 790i Ultra SLI motherboard, to try out and compare. The Asus definitely has a stronger/thicker board so you can mount heavy CPU fans like a Ruby Orb, etc. on it with no worries. Also, the Asus boards Northbridge is already pre-piped for H2O cooling... a nice feature!
The XFX board isn't piped for H2O cooling, like the Asus board but, it has larger cooling fins. They're dark metal though, not shiny brass like the Asus. And the XFX’s Northbridge has a Very TALL cooling tower that gets in the way of most CPU fans, so if you’re not going to use H2O to cool, don't buy the XFX board, stick with this Asus!
You'll also need loads of POWER to run this board so, buy a large power supply! I had to bump up to a 1000 Watt to get things running right. It's a power hog!
