2 out of 5 eggs Not good for linux 10/18/2008

This review is from: BUFFALO LS-W1.0TGL/R1 1TB LinkStation Pro Duo NAS

Works great for windows. Lot of bang for the buck, network ready. Reasonably speedy, quiet, nice web interface. I'm using it in Raid 1 for redundancy.

Doesn't work well with linux (Debian or Ubuntu). Chokes on large (>2G) files, which interferes with backups (possibly ext2 filesystem?). Your rsync backups will fail silently. Doesn't seem to deal with permissions well. You will not be able to preserve permissions on backed up files.

Other Thoughts:

This may not be a deal breaker to some, but if you want to back up large media files or permissions are an important part of what you are doing look elsewhere. A simple external USB drive works better than this. Or spend a few extra bucks and cobble together your own, you'll have more features. I also found a site where people are hacking these things to run Debian and ubuntu, but have not tried it yet...don't want to brick it.
