5 out of 5 eggs One of the best for the money 12/01/2008

This review is from: ONKYO TXSR706B 7.1-Channel THX Select2 Plus Home Theater Receiver

Pros:

Great stereo, perhaps the best for the money. Also can be found in the TXSR706S (silver). Also compare Denon, Polk, and Yamaha if you want to comparison shop. This particular unit is well powered, has tons of video inputs with 1080p upsampling, and easy menus and configurations. I chose it because it has 1080p upsampling on the s-video and composite video inputs, while most other receivers upsample the HDMI only. It also has a great selection of listening modes, and is one of the entry level THX Select certified units. My favorite aspect is the on-screen menus. They're easy to navigate, and it avoid having to squint at the front panel of the receiver. Of course, that's assumed with today's technology. You can also rename a few of the inputs, which eliminates the annoying "video 1", "video 2" confusions. You can also customize the equilizers and levels and save them for each input. The overall design and layout of this receiver was well thought out. You'll be happy.

Cons:

A little bulky and heavy, but that's a limit of today's technology, not the product. It's not like you'll need to move it much. The remote is a bit much to operate and program, you'll need about an hour alone with the manual to program it, and a few weeks to get used to operating it. People visiting my house, and embarrassingly sometimes myself, have trouble switching between and working all the devices. It requires a little thought and concentration to work the remote, but the results are satisfying. Just don't try it while drinking.

Other Thoughts:

I chose this receiver after a few weeks or researching and asking opinions. It came highly recommended and lives up to the hype. This is perhaps the only product here that I've give a full 5 rating to. It's a shame that someone else gave it a poor rating because he didn't know how to use it. Of course, if it was defective, my apologies. I understand how that should lower the overall rating. Chances are though, he didn't have the correct settings before he tried the auto-calibrate.
