Nice Headphones, But Fragile 01/27/2009
This review is from: Bose® Around-Ear Headphones
This is an update to a review I did a year ago. And I can write a better review from my experience with this product.
What I like about these headphones is the superb sound quality, light weight and comfort. I mainly use them on my PC for listening to classical music and gaming. I have used them occasionally for evening walks with a MP3 player. They are very comfortable and hardly noticeable. These headphones come with a carry bag, a 3.5 mm 6 ft extension, and a 3.5 to 6.5mm jack.
These headphones are of very light construction and fragile – especially the gimbaled plastic arm/forks that attaches the ear cups to the headband will break. This happened on my set after 1 year and 3 months of light usage. And they broke while I carefully removed them from my head. The area where it broke was relatively thin (1/8 inch) plastic shaped in a crescent. Examination of the break indicated the plastic had fatigued. Bose should have cast the arm/forks of thicker or solid plastic or tough nylon.
I called Bose Customer service and discovered the warranty for a free exchange expires after 1 year from date of manufacture – not the date of purchase. I purchased my set 5 months after they were manufactured. Bose did not offer to repair these phones but offered a pro-rated exchange of $60 for a new set.
I would not recommend these headphones if light usage will result in a broken arm after a year of service. For the money I paid for them I expect these to last at least three years. This is too bad because the sound quality and comfort are superb.
There are better headphones I would recommend for the price which are more rugged and offer better features.
These headphones sound much better if the sound card and games were configured for “2.1 speakers” instead of “headphone” settings.
These headphones are powerful and it’s difficult to control the volume on the PC. They are really better suited for MP3 players.
