Not reliable RAID5 04/26/2009

5 bay extenal unit that fairly well built with adequate cooling. All 5 drives are recognized individually.
Can not get the RAID5 feature working reliably under any operating system (XP, Windows 2003 Server, Windows 2008 Server, or Vista). Doesn't matter if it's the 32 or 64 bit versions. The problem is whenever the machine is restarted/turned on, after a normal shutdown, the software says the array is corrupt and needs to be rebuilt. Talked with tech support and they didn't seem to know how to support their own product. Neither Rosewill or Sans Digital (who actually makes the box) could figure it out. They would give the typical "it may be your drivers" answer. I tried all the drivers that came with the boxes (yes I bought 2 of theses), plus the drivers from their site, and issue remains.
I purchased 2 of these boxes and they both display the same issue with RAID5. The HDD drives I'm using are Hitachi 1TB drives. I suspected it might be a motherboard compatibility issue so I tried it on three (3) different brands of motherboards without success. I have been building and installing computers for 15+ years and never had an issue like this before. Finally decided to let the OS handle the RAID5 and just use these as drive holders. If you'd be satisfied with your OS handling the RAID5, I can recommend these units. If you are buying these for the built-in (although software-based) RAID5 functionality, DON'T!
