Small Home or Apartment - No Range 06/16/2009
This review is from: Linksys WRT54G2-RM Wireless-G Broadband Router IEEE 802.3/3u, IEEE 802.11b/g
Works great if you have a small home or apartment. In my 1700sq. ft. home, I dont have any problem surfing anywhere upstairs or downstairs. 2 bars drop at the far end of the house, farthest point away... no surprise. Same great features for QOS & Security as the original 54G.
If you want to surf outside forget about it. Stepping outside maybe your home will leave you very disappointed in the performance. Really kinda shocked. Thought it might be a fluke so I purchased a second for a customer who has a much larger home than I, 2600 sq. ft. Very very weak connection short of being all of 25ft from router and still upstairs where it was installed.
My original WRT54G with HiGain Antennae & DD-WRT firmware smoked this thing in every way. (How I miss it!) After it died, i bought this WRT54G2 (new not refurb) to replace. My old WRT54G allowed me to walk 7 houses down the street in either direction before giving up. The 54G2, all of 25ft out the front door before it wants to give up. On nice days I would sit some 100ft from the house in my lawn chair and watch streaming video easily. Its not horrible, if range isn't that big a deal then go for it. Otherwise pay the extra $$$ for the original. It's just better!
