1 out of 5 eggs Worst Total War Game Ever 06/28/2009

This review is from: Empire: Total War PC Game

Pros:

The time period is a good idea. May work as an Internet only game. Lots of variety in units and countries to choose.

Cons:

Everything. Poor design. Many, many bugs. Never able to finish a campaign because the game would eventually freeze or objectives would disappear in the America campaign, meaning you could not continue.

Cut scenes are unwatchable due to stuttering and clipping; slow, dark ugly graphics; tries to be like Civilization by adding a lame tech tree. Horrible diplomacy and a brain dead AI.

Combat pause is delayed fro several seconds and zoom and camera angles are irratic. Units are very dumb and will stand there and die because you did not tell them to breathe. Combat adviser talks about random issues that have nothing to do with the current situation and he has an irritating, snide accent.

Overall Review:

Typical game: Wait 3-5 minutes for the game to load. Opening cinematic of ship combat stutters and skips until escape is hit repeatedly. Start campaign. Intro music and voice acting stutters and skips. Hit escape. Read the all pages of the manual for 10 minutes to find out what how trade ships are used. It does not say. First combat with ships finds ships surrounded by fog and dark, ugly graphics. Must tell gunners to load guns, they can't figure this out themselves. Combat is tedious and boring. First land combat is a meddled mess of dark graphics and units. Must tell artillery to "unlimber" while they are being pummeled. Duh! Offer of thousands of dollars for a cease fire from a foe who has been beaten like a drum is rejected; diplomacy is useless. Every few turns must select an item in the tech tree; things like how to put animals in a pen instead of letting them roam free. Didn't they know how to do that in the 1700's? STAY AWAY. DO NOT BUY THIS GARBAGE.
