Has trouble with 100baseT 07/10/2009
This review is from: LINKSYS EG005W Gigabit 5-Port Switch
Small size, inexpensive, works well if all devices connected are communicating at gigabit speeds.
We had two servers connected to this switch at gigabit speeds, and also a slower 100baseT Cisco switch connected. I was seeing a HUGE 35% TCP segment retransmit rate and hundreds of TCP resets and network throughput was ABYSMAL.
To troubleshoot, I set all devices connected to this switch to 100baseT, disconnected the Cisco switch and connected my laptop and tried transferring files. Still got the same horrible results. Then I tried everything set to gigabit speed and had near-perfect results. I thought at first that it didn't like the 100baseT/gigabit mix, but it turned out that it didn't like 100baseT at all.
I replaced it with a cheap Netgear 10/100baseT switch and had no issues with retransmits or TCP resets.
All connections were at autonegotiate for both switches. It could be that this Linksys was improperly negotiating flow control when dealing with 100baseT devices. I've never seen anything like this before.
