Show me the money or I won't show you the driver 01/15/2010
This review is from: Acer Desktop PC AspireRevo AR1600-U910H Intel Atom 230 1GB DDR2 160GB HDD Windows XP Home
Pros:
who cares
Cons:
Got the R1600 from Best Buy for 199+tax, Created a factory restore DVD set for the pre-installed XP Home.
Since it came with XP Home, I wanted to do a fresh installation with XP Pro. So I need a driver for its AHCI during the text part installation (Press F6 to ... you know the deal). I could switch it to native IDE mode, but why should I if it is capable of AHCI? Searched Acer support website, no result. Called Acer support line, the level 1 tech didn't even know what I was talking about. At the end, he agreed to give me their higher level support number, 1-800-237-6483. Called it, the guy there told me gladly, that he can find someone to get the driver for me, but that WON"T HAPPEN UNLESS I BUY A SUPPORT UPGRADE. The cheapest would be $60 for 30 minutes. That's quite an expensive blackmail for a driver file. I am sorry that the guy couldn't see my finger over the phone.
Overall Review:
If someone told me yesterday that there exists a PC maker, who would refuse to provide some basic driver download links for its products to the customers unless they bribe,in the form of buying support upgrade, I would consider it a joke. And that's Acer.
