This review is from: NETGEAR XE104-100NAR Powerline 4-port Ethernet Adapter Up to 85Mbps
It works. Indistinguishable from magic. Cheap solution.
Distance matters and so do other things beyond your control. Worth a try when ethernet or wireless solutions are impractical or non-starters.
In shorthand, hoping to help others:
Problem: Big, older home with an addition and a separate garage with office over garage. Three breaker boxes! Cable Internet/router at opposite end of home from breaker boxes/garage/addition. Customer doesn't want outside wire. Customer has made do with very weak and sporadic wireless access in office.
Tried out the powerline solution in many outlets.
In same room as router: Near 100 percent.
Next room over: 90 percent:
Down a flight of stairs: 75 percent
Downstairs two rooms over: 60 percent
Back upstairs in new addition, on another breaker box:
Uh-oh. SPORADIC connection at 5 mb ... seems slower and drops sometimes. Similar in several outlets. One gives no signal at all. Then -- surprise -- 20mbps, consistent ... in bathroom outlet. Not ideal.
Traipse across walkway to office over garage.
Poor signal in every outlet -- except one, eureka! No known reason but we get consistent 10mbps in ONE outlet. Set up access point. Cust
