An excellent laptop 04/17/2010
System shipped with Windows 7 (which I rarely use). Fedora 12 installed on this system without any problems. Running Fedora 12, I have excellent WiFi reception. Also the video is excellent. I've used this system to watch videos on Hulu. The touchpad on the laptop was recognized by Fedora 12 and it automatically provided some advanced touchpad features.
There was no documentation that came with the system that gave you the key for accessing the system BIOS. I called the 800 number for technical support on a weekend and somebody immediately answered the phone and instructed me to try F2 to get into the BIOS.
The webcam works in a Fedora 12 environment.
ASUS was providing 2 year warranties on their laptops. I appear to have purchased this machine when the 2 year warranties were being discontinued. Now the standard warranty with ASUS laptops appears to be 1 year.
ASUS has a product called ExpressGate that ships with some of their laptops. ExpressGate gives you a very fast boot into a browser so you can access the Internet without booting into a full OS. Although an ExpressGate manual was included with the system, this software is not shipped with the laptop. I may create my own equivalent by using a Tiny Core Linux distribution.
There is absolutely no hardware manual for this system. I have tried using the K50IJ hardware manual. However, the P50IJ appears to be slightly different and there is no written procedure for routine maintenance like replacing the hard drive.
Overall, this is an excellent laptop. I am using it with the ability to dual boot into Windows 7 and Fedora 12. Fedora 12 is the primary OS that I use on this system. I will migrate to Fedora 13 when it becomes available.
