Great Machine and Great Form Factor 08/01/2010
I'm really impressed with this little box. The one niggle I have for this model is the Celeron CPU, but upgrading that to a fast Pentium dual core was cheap and easy. I also replaced with the stock HDD with a set of 1.5's I had and that necessitated an OS reinstall, which was also impressive. Their remote installation process from an existing PC was flawless and made me feel great about my prospects for a recovery if ever needed.
It's a very small machine, not much larger than the 4 HDDs it hold stacked together. A lot of storage and value for the space it take and its easy to find a spot for it on the desk.
The installed HP software is great, but take some time to configure the elements you want and need. The Twonky server can be a real system hog. And get a good antivirus package for the thing. And also change the default LED settings. You can tone them back so it doesn't light up the room at night.
Disk leveling across drives is weird. It seems to never place anything on the first (boot) disk. I haven't nearly filled up the disks though so it might start once there is more pressure on the storage system. It's also hard to tell how the disks are being used unless you get a Home Server add-on.
I wish they made a version with 8 HDD slots and I would never again lust for a DROBO box. It's small enough that even with double the disk slots it would still be a great small-footprint choice
Really do wish HP provided this same machine with more HDD spaces. And looking forward to future Server 2008-based releases of the Home Server OS (now in Beta).
