A few itty bitty issues 08/18/2010
This review is from: ASUS P6X58D Premium LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
This is a fantastic motherboard, it has a huge amount of overclocking options, as well as a fairly decent overclocking software (although IMO software overclocking will never match BIOS overclocking). It is a ridiculously stable motherboard.
My first one would lock up after about 1 minute of anything, and I could not run MemTest or even install Windows. It had to be RMAed, but this is such a great motherboard, I only took off one egg. Also, this motherboard stopped me from buying a second GTX 470 for SLI. With the 470's high temps, you cannot put them side by side on air, but you would need an eighth expansion slot to utilize the third PCI Express 2.0 slot on this board, since the heatsink already takes up the first expansion slot. I don't see why they could not have moved the PCI Express 2.0s up one slot and everything else down one slot. This issue effectively stops anyone from using Tri-SLI unless they have eight expansion slots, which very few people do. It's just hard for me to wrap my head around why that they would make the bottom half of the third video card actually require an eighth expansion slot, when those are as uncommon as they are.
I feel that this is a great board, and the PCI slot placement issue was a big lapse in judgement by ASUS, if they had either shortened their (massive) heatsink, or moved the slots around, it could have been easily avoided. Also the RMA issue was not a big deal for me, since NewEgg has the greatest customer service ANYWHERE.
