I have only begun to explore the possibilities of this device. I plugged in my Carver M400t amp into the headphone jack and my Allison Four speakers just came alive! So much better sounding than my PC's sound card! My main use of this device is to display weather and play streaming music and so far it has surpassed my expectations!!! I am still looking into getting this thing to show local weather radar.
Slow to boot, internal speakers stink, confusing interface until you get to know your way around it. So far I don't see an option to use it as a media extender to play MP3's from a PC on the same network.
I got this to replace a Foxconn nettop as the sound quality was totally mediocre coming out of the nettop. Obviously the screen on this Sony Dash is smaller than a 22 inch LCD I was using on the nettop, but the sound quality is far superior coming out of the headphone jack! I now have a soundstage, cymbals crash and cow bells sound like cow bells! I no longer feel like I am listening to my music under water!! It is very pleasant to listen to and I have yet to personalize it, but for so much in such a little footprint, I cannot praise it enough! Now if it could only act as a media extender on my home network this thing would be the cat's meow! Note: It does have a USB port for plugging in USB drives to play music and that works after a firmware update. I even tried it with a 32GB Patriot usb drive and it worked great, but the 120GB HD was a no go.
