good hard drive for good price....but 08/04/2011
i was initially impressed with this drive.
good price, competetive with WD's offerings at the time, which is the only other brand of desktop hard drive i ever purchase.
15.3MS average access time
144MB/sec burst transfer rate
but read on.
runs hot. since this drive had my OS installed on it, i gave it the best ventilated prime real estate in my case.
always seemed warm.
im writing this review after about 18 months of ownership. A few weeks ago the drive failed, too many bad sectors, i was able to recover much of my important data from the drive before ultimate failure to even boot. I have now completed the RMA process, Seagate sent me a refurbished unit of the exact same hard drive. Seagates warantees are only 3 years, and i had to spend $10 on packaging and 10$ on shipping that meets their rediculous requirements. (newegg does not ship NEW hard drives to these requirements, and newegg is almost never responsible for damage in transit)
secondly, the warantee does not start for another 3 years, rather it just continues for the remaining duration of the orriginal warantee.
in conclusion. I now have a drive which has built up a reputation as being less than reliable and with a shorter warantee, and i find myself strugling over wether to put my OS back on this hard drive, and risk that i may have yet another disk failure in my near future.
Seagate is usually very good as making high capacity drives for cheap, though usually they are nosier than WD's counterparts. As long as you avoid the couple of "bad" models, Seagate drives remain a decent choice.
I am however, dissatisfied with the reliability of this hardware, and the manufacturers commitment to their product. I will avoid their "budget" hard drives in the future.
(after looking around online, it seems these drives do have a high failure rate in the 1-2 year range, i am not alone)
