4 out of 5 eggs Cool device but lousy instructions 08/13/2011

This review is from: eSecure ES17J51C 1280 x 960 MAX Resolution Spy Keyfob Micro Camera & Recorder

It's a video camera in a very small package that's concealable and camouflaged well.

Sometimes these things actually look more like doctored videocams than they do whatever device they're supposed to be disguised as, this one passes itself off as an alarm/door lock key fob pretty well. The lens is recessed on the bottom (opposite the key end) and the aperture it shoots through is reasonably inconspicuous.

The mic appears to be positioned right next to the lens and is somewhat directionally sensitive. It picks up what is in the camera view much better than what's behind the camera view. (When I bought this I wasn't even sure it had audio with the video).

Takes acceptable, useful video and photos. About what you'd expect from an inexpensive device this small but not bad at all. Lots better than my first Polaroid digital camera 15+ years ago.

Once you figure out how it works it's pretty easy to use. But figuring out how it works is where it all falls down...

The instructions are HORRIBLE, totally incomprehensible gibberish. I can't stress this enough, there is no reason why the mfg. can't hire someone and pay them $100 to write up some instructions in Engrich. There are instructions on the box and an instruction sheet inside the box that after being deciphered as much as possible conflict with each other.

If you need video for evidential purposes you HAVE to manually configure the time by editing a file that you HAVE to create and the device consumes that file when it recognizes and sets the correct date and time.

It has NO onboard storage at all and MUST use a separate MicroSD card which isn't mentioned anywhere before you buy. If you don't have one laying around...

It has a tiny LED that is in the off state when the unit is off OR the unit is recording video. Not so much a con because you don't want it on when you're covertly recording but be aware.

I'm doing my best to provide instructions within NewEggs 1000 char. l

Other Thoughts:

Full charge = overnight the first time. The LED is ON when USB connected. Unit does NOT indicate full charge in any way, instructions lie

Buttons designations;

1-rounder button nearest lens
2-triangular button distal to lens

1.Turn ON unit- press button 2 for > 3 seconds

2.Unit is active LED is ON unit "ready"

3.Take still photos- push button 1 and release immediately. Unit takes 1.5 seconds to write the pic to memory and return to "ready". LED will go off while file is being written and come back on when unit is in "ready" condition.

4.To take video from ON state press button 1 > 3sec. LED will flash and shut off, UNIT IS IN VIDEO RECORDING MODE AND TAKING VIDEO.

5.To halt video rec. and/or power off unit press button 2 >3sec.

To reset video time stamp create a file named TAG.txt at the device root alongside DCIM folder, edit thus and save using current date/time data-

If TAG.txt file loaded correctly file is "consum
