What a great upgrade for Gigabyte 790GX! 12/02/2011
Moved from dual core Athlon 6000+ to this quad core. Passmark CPU rating went from ~1600 to 3980. Changed OS to W7Hx64. Idle power usage went up slightly from ~70W on old Athlon to ~73W, and W7 power settings set to performance levels. Was able to get it down to ~57W by tweaking power savings, including bios, but will leave it at performance settings when completed since will be a workhorse PC. Not overclocking (what a stupid thing to do, as an engineer I know what this is doing), but bios automatically upped memory to 1066 with new CPU. The mem timing lengthened after a few failures in Memtest86+, but kept at 1066.
Not a real CON: This is an OEM purchase, so those who don't know - this means no extras, and no fan or thermal grease. All OEM items are for bare parts (HDDs, optical drives, etc.). I truly hate seeing reviewers giving knocks on OEM items not "bundled" when that is why they are cheaper to begin with. Read up! Especially the warranty.
Had to update the bios before changing CPUs since needed to recognize new CPU.
Have had mixed results with AMD over the years. This went very well. Other than my i7-2600 rig, this is the fastest PC I have. Only other find I have is that the CPU fan setting had to be changed from Auto to PWM to work right. Range overnight with Prime 95 and peak thermals ~53 deg C and Xigmatek fan, room at 21 deg C.
