Pretty fast and quiet for an external optical drive. All my machines recognize it at post which means it can be used to boot DVD's, CD's, etc if necessary, making it rather useful for netbooks. I use it mainly to store multiple 4-6+ GB videos on a single disc, which is more or less awesome as far as convenience goes. Once you have a BD-R drive, dual layer discs seem to be a kind of moot point. I haven't tried to burn a blu-ray with my laptop while running off the battery, so I can't speak to how much this thing kills batteries when writing 20+ GB to a disc.
None I can really think of. There was a recent firmware update readily available for it which was nice, because frequently updated optical disc drive firmware helps ensure better recording results. Not really a complaint but I wish there was a way to disable the blue LED on the front of the device, just as I wish ALL these blue LED's they love putting on everything (network adapters, for example) could be somehow disabled. That's seriously my only complaint about it, which means overall it must be a decent product. Burns CD's, DVD's, and BD-R's without a hitch, but I can't speak for other more unconventional formats (CD-RW, DVD-RAM, etc.).
It makes more sense if you don't have a BD-R drive to buy an external USB drive, so you're not limited to running it in a single computer like a desktop's internal SATA drive would be. This thing was a little pricey all things considered, but the convenience you receive in exchange makes it well worth the price.
