Here's The Truth 03/07/2012
Don't expect NewEgg or Acer to publish answers to some of the questions a buyer in the marker for a laptop in this price point might have so I thought I would add some specifics. This laptop is not your ordinary laptop at least from ACER and most other vendors. For the record this laptop has FOUR thats right 4 memory slots in it. It comes with two 4 gig sticks installed and you can pick up 2 more here on Newegg for around 40 dollars so that will give you a massive total RAM cacpacity of 16 gigs. This laptop comes with 2 SATA 2.5 inch WD 500 gig hard drives so a savvy geek can put in a 64 or 120 SSD and still have secondary storage of 500 gigs. The screen on the laptop is big and clear but you need to be parked in front of it as the angle of viewing is designed for a laptop user not as a movie screen for others on the couch or in the room. The keyboard is chiclet style and is fine for me but fast typers will have a learning curve. This is an i7 proc...what more do you want?
Typical ACER nonsense about refusing to provide a real Windows 7 DVD recovery disc. I tried...I pecked at them real hard ...but they simply won't cough up a real Acer specific Windows 7 disc...so don't bother trying. I just downloaded a MSDN Windows Home Premium ISO from Microsoft....burned a DVD from it...booted into the new disc and entered the ACER license code and there you go...a bloat free operating system that you can configure the way YOU want it...not the way ACER wants it. I wiped the hard drive without so much as even ever clicking on any of the free or trial software junk that the machine comes with. I mean who uses Mcafee AV platform? Seriously. And who wants a trial version of Norton Backup or Office 2010? NOBODY who would find this laptop interesting that's for sure.
Here is how I arrived at my decision to spend the extra 2 hundred dollars....in other words I had my eye on an ACER i5 laptop here at NewEgg that was priced at 699 dollars....but my girlfriend in her never ending attempt to "help" me buy things...my girlf friend stated "
Jay...why wouldn't you just spend 2 more hundred dollars and get the i7?" And I did...and she was right...this machine has 4 RAM slots...unheard of in most laptops...2 SATA hard drive slots....not a normal setup either....and my SSD and two more RAM sticks are on there way right now from NEWEGG. At the end of the day this machine for around a thousand dollars will literally perfrom at a level that machines that cost much more perform. And did I tell you that the Radeon HD6650M has its own 2 gig memory installed on it's board? This laptop has years of uses in it. This laptop is just screaming "Spend your income tax refund check on me" A grand is a lot of money for sure...but this is a great investment.
