1 out of 5 eggs End of the line for WD 04/20/2012

This review is from: Western Digital Elements SE 1TB USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive

It's small and quiet.

First one was DOA. Second one had sketchy cable. Third one had a busted micro USB connection. None of them ran at USB2.0 speeds. WD support has been less than useless and their Indian call center doesn't even bother hiring people that can speak English any more.
Three strikes and you're out. I'll never buy WD again.

Other Thoughts:

I've had WD drives pretty much since the beginning of time so I didn't think twice about buying this one (and the 500Gb one at the same time).
This seems to be the product of a management "process" that determined that price trumped reliability. The USB cord uses a micro connector that breaks easily and the cord itself is a 2c Chinese item that breaks connection if you even look at it wrong. A good 90% of the time when I plug this drive in I get either a hardware error or a disk error. The 10% of the time it did work, it would run for 5 or 6 minutes at most before first giving me a delayed-write failure and then ultimately a "USB device connected to this machine has malfunctioned error". Also, it NEVER ran at USB2.0 speeds. WD's support on these issues has been appalling. I've given up - it's easier than trying to get a replacement.
This line of products (exact same issue on 500Gb) is a something WD should be ashamed of. It's total crapware built down to a WalMart price.
