First off, it's not a samsung drive but a cheap piece of junk from seagate.
First time using this drive I got several write failures so I looked for the firmware update everbody talks about. Okay, ignore samsung because their utilities and firmware won't even work on this drive because it doesn't recognize the drive. Nice! Supposed to be a samsung drive.
Okay, so I pulled the drive, reformatted, and aligned the drive on win7. Then I ran the seagate tests for dos and windows -- no errors except every time it complains the drive at some point in it's history that it ran at some some ridiculously high temp, and btw the current temp reading is bogus.
So I checked the drive for bad sectors and then did a surface scan. After running for more than a day, I get an i/o error just before the test finishes.
Bottom line is that this drive appears to fail intermittently but seagate won't take it back because it passes their tests. Nice!
Also really cool. This drive won't run except as a 'primary'. Set it up any other way and my mobo won't see it, or it does see it but then causes apps to hang or run ridiculously slow. I can't see any errors or reported failures but my system is completely useless with this drive plugged in. Remove the drive and everything is fine again.
