Audio and pci-e x 16 issues 08/28/2012
This review is from: ASRock 970 EXTREME3 AM3+ AMD 970 + SB950 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
Good mobo overall... just got a dud.
The mobo would not post if the graphics card was in the pci-e slot. After many MANY attempts at booting, it finally worked. I immediately installed the gpu drivers and the latest bios for the mobo. After that the mobo would post without fail, HOWEVER the mobo could not fully read the gpu, and the cpu fan would go apesh*t LOUD signifying a connection issue (GPU to mobo) The analog front panel audio 3.5mm jack wouldn't work, it would claim that the speakers weren't "plugged in". Even after installing the latest Realtek drivers and latest mobo bios, the onboard audio would still not work, not being able to access AMD HDMI Audio through the mobo's bios due to the previously mentioned GPU+mobo connection issue. I was at a complete loss.
ASRock is a reputable company... It seems this batch of mobos came out funky. As many other buyers have had similar issues.
We sincerely apologize that you having difficulty with mainboard. Please check if the VGA card has been thoroughly installed to PCIE slot, try with another PCIE slot, test with another known good VGA card to check if the symptom still occur. For the front audio panel, please visit the link at “ftp://188.8.131.52/manual/970%20Extreme3.pdf “under page 27 to verify the connections are properly connected to mainboard’s audio header. Please try with another known good front audio connector (provided by computer case) to eliminate the issue.
