This review is from: BYTECC Firewire 1394A 3+1 Ports PCI Card - VIA Chipset Model BT-FW310V
The PRICE! No rebate to hate! Well made card. Two different height PCI brackets. Two different styles of FireWire ports. Also, an internal port. No driver needed (under XP, at least) Hot connect/disconnect.
Not free. Too bad there are so many rocket scientists out there reviewing this board.
I do not have any kind of audio (sampler, mixer, whatever) device to try this card with. Timing would be very critical for that application, of course, so I can't vouch for it to work doing that. There are reviews that say the VIA chipset doesn't. Instead, it's running an Epson R1800 large format printer, which has a Firewire port AND a USB port. So it works great with a bi-directional printer hooked to it. The USB port is connected to a print server, which puts the printer on the network for anyone to print to, but which is NOT bi-directional. The problem is, no ink and status monitoring. This solves that. It's (also) connected to my main computer in the same room via FireWire now and it works perfectly; everything does. The <ONLY> thing I'm not sure of is whether this card would work with a high quality audio device. Everything else people wrote in the other (negative) reviews, you can disregard, as far as I'm concerned. In Windows XP, it installs the driver during boot in no time at all and they could send the card without the CD and probably have a lot less confused boneheads on their hands.
