Inexpensive way to boost PC performance if you already have a AM3 socket motherboard. Overclocks quite nicely if needed.
Long term not a good investment if you are also having to purchase a motherboard to go along with it. An Intel I5 will cost a little more, but you will get better performance thus delaying yet another upgrade.
I already had a socket AM3 motherboard with an 3Ghz Athlon II X4, but the processor really lagged in many processes. There was a noticeable performance boost going to the Phenom II X4 3.4Ghz with minimal upgrade cost. It easily overclocked to 4Ghz with no special cooling. It feels like it runs twice as fast. To me if you can't double the performance why bother upgrading.
