Fans run at full blast 06/04/2013
Integrated RAID with expander, handles 12 drives, nice packaging, compact, shipped quickly, redundant fans, lots of available firmware updates, high density, well-documented.
Loud! Louder all-by-itself than our entire colocation facility. For some reason the fans run at moon-rocket-takeoff hearing-damaging-intensity 100% of the time. It is so loud the sounds goes right through the heavy server-room door. When I do a FW update I can hear the fans briefly throttle down, so I know the speed controller is working.
I suspect that if I divine the mysteries of the FRUSDR file (but how do I do that?) I can reconfigure this for something sane, but given that the case and system board are both Intel and both pre-integrated, that should not be necessary. It's possible that a sensor is damaged but the SEL says nothing about that. By the time this project is over I will be way behind on my other work but at least I should understand the BMC.
