Gets it done. 11/30/2005
This review is from: Apec ADR-2404S 4 CH/30 fps PCI Video/Audio Card with 2400 DVR software
The card itself works great and it performs as expected. The software has many options and configurations and gets the job done. The motion detection feature is awesome and has many useful settings.
The DVR2400 program on the CD was apparently corrupted because nothing worked correctly at first. I downloaded the latest version from the APEC website and it worked fine. The program locks out Windows task manager when it is operating so if you need to access it (to close an unresponsive program or end a task) while running the DVR software, too bad. Also, the proprietary video saving format does not allow saves directly to mpeg or other format and can only be converted afterwards to AVI, which in my case, turns out much worse quality video than the original. Not a big deal unless you need to copy video to play on a DVD player or something. Otherwise, the built in software player shows good video on the PC.
Be prepared to do a lot of playing around and tweaking of settings and such to figure out how all the settings work. The printed manual is basically useless and doesn’t tell you much. There is a more detailed 300 page manual on the CD but unless you want to print it all out, it’s not the easiest for a quick reference. Once I got it going and figured out what exactly did what, it’s been smooth sailing. In all, it gets the job done and is pretty versatile.
