Cheap (less than $100 with a coupon code).. Seems to be quality enough for the price.
As many have said and I should have listened to, is that the drives get too hot in this. Why? Airflow. There is none until a drive gets to 55C (131F), then the fan is suppose to run low speed, but after 10 min. of copying files to it (dual 4TB drives), it wasn't getting higher than 46C (114F) according to SMART. The thing is, when I shut it down and pull the drives, they're pretty toasty. So although users have reported all these overheat issues, now you know why. The "OS" on this is also pretty underdeveloped compared to Synology, which I also have one of. That has the best NAS OS I've seen yet, but I wanted a different brand because I write network discovery software and wanted a different brand at my place, plus it was so cheap, I couldn't pass it up. Remember, you get what you pay for. Another $100 and you could have a Synology.
I've never seen a system with a fan where you didn't have access to it unless the fan just ran all the time. In this system I'd rather it run all the time. You need airflow around these drives, period. I even installed the latest firmware (June 2013) and it had no fan control setting. I've bought 3 Shuttle PCs for my wife throughout our relationship (i5 system currently) and have been fairly happy with them. The only thing so far I can see that hurts this is fan control, but that's serious because as people have said, their drives DIE or the system shuts down. I have no idea if even this fan will ever power up because I don't want to try pushing my $300 worth of drives that far. I thought about sending it back, but it's not Newegg's fault. I'm in the process of trying to take it apart and hard wire the fan so I can control it or have it on all the time.
