Much better than wireless 09/17/2013
A Newegg Eggxpert review for the "Rosewill RPLC-200PKIT": I was anxious to re-try this technology. I had tried similar products years ago and they failed miserably. First, I was pleasantly surprised by the super easy setup. My modem/router, an Actiontec Q1000 (Century Link), coexists nicely in a basement cupboard sharing a power outlet with Remote Power Line Connector (RPLC) #1. The included 5 foot ethernet cable was 4 foot longer than it needed to be. DON'T FORGET to press the "Reset/Security" button where the ethernet cable plugs in to turn on encryption.
It took me longer to walk up 2 flights of stairs than it took to setup the second RPLC. I use my laptop in a spare bedroom where in can sneak to when I can't sleep. I also use that room to charge all our small devices - phones, tablets, RC cars. The only reason I mention this is that there was only one outlet available for RPLC #2 at it would need a much longer ethernet cable. I used a 15 foot spare. Again in the time it took to relocate a power strip (~30 seconds), my Windows 7 Home had already located and installed the proper drivers. From the laptop I turned off the router's wireless service, then the laptop's wireless. That was 12 days ago and it's been working flawlessly since.
The units are large, too large if you need to plug 3-prong power cord into the second outlet, I didn't so no dings.
I didn't get the transfer rates others reported, but the RPLC is at least a 30% improvement over my wireless. But most importantly, it doesn't "drop signal."
RPLC - 3.8 MB/sec up & down, large files. Wireless 2.9
RPLC - 3.5 MB/sec up & down, small files. Wireless 2.4
Newegg has an error on their "Rosewill High Performance Powerline Adapter" chart. The RPLC-200KIT and RPLC-200PKIT allow speeds up to 200Mbps/sec not 500Mbps, as the 200KIT and 200PKIT have 10/100baseT connections.
