YAMAHA RX-A1020 7.2-Channel Receiver
  • 7.2 channel
  • 8 HDMI
  • 3D passthrough

4 out of 5 eggs Plenty of power, lots of features 10/17/2013

This review is from: YAMAHA RX-A1020 7.2-Channel Receiver

Pros:

Power rated at 110W with honest specs (2 channels driven, 20-20 0.06% THD, 8Ω), rated for 4Ω speakers, phono input, YPAO with multi-measure, 7-band manual parametric equalizer to tweak YPAO settings, can browse iPod via receiver remote or directly, network audio is convenient (Net Radio, SiriusXM, Pandora), preamp outputs, bi-amp capable. “Learning” remote handy to control disc player and TV.
The on-screen menus are clear, useful, and attractive. Networking is a cinch—I plugged it into Ethernet and it updated itself, AirPlay works great, I have access to all the net audio, and it found my DLNA files on the network.
Can configure surround back to use one or two speakers. 33 pounds of ground hugging weight must mean there’s good stuff inside.

Cons:

No major cons. Only one crossover setting for sub whereas other receivers have a crossover setting for each set of speakers (fronts, surrounds, center, etc.) which is useful if you have different non-full-range speakers. I’d also like finer increments for the crossover settings—it skips from 60 to 80Hz but I want 70. Another entry-level receiver allows 10Hz increments from 40-200Hz. It runs warm compared to the HTIB it replaced. This unit like many receivers with 2 subwoofer outputs does not allow separate levels/distance/YPAO/PEQs per subwoofer, however the next model up (RX-A2020 for $500 more) does some of this. Won’t recognize my old iPod (4th generation) on USB but the old HTIB did. Net Radio bookmarks are little inconvenient to set (must go to web site). Buttons on remote are tiny and many are the same shape. DLNA browsing interface is not as quick or convenient as my Blu-ray player, chokes on playlists with more than 96 songs (at least with firmware 1.41).

Other Thoughts:

This replaces an inexpensive HTIB I was using to drive my bookshelf speakers and subwoofer so of course it’s a huge upgrade. The speakers sounded fine but I discovered that the HTIB has a fixed crossover at about 100-120Hz (much higher than the 75Hz my subwoofer could reach) and also rolled off bass below ~35Hz (higher than my subs 25Hz range) so now I’m getting all the bass I’m entitled to. The 4Ω impedance capability is handy for the Magnepan MG10s I’m using for surrounds (dipoles work great here and there’s not enough wall clearance in front).

Can set to run in “Eco Mode” but manual does not say what it actually does.

Lots of features I’ll probably never use like component video, S-video, 4k upscaling, multi-zone.
