Amazing Bang for Buck 10/22/2013
I put together my first PC (built for gaming purposes) with this thing, and I couldn't resist the price. Installation was easy, fan went on without a hitch. Thermal paste comes pre-applied, making installation effortless.
Now that my machine is running, I absolutely love this thing. Multitasking has virtually no impact on performance, and it rivals and even beats some modern i5's in multi-threaded programs.
Many people will swear by Intel when it comes to gaming, but most games that really need all that much processing power these days (i.e. Battlefield) are well multithreaded. Paired this with a 660ti, and I get awesome framerates maxing out just about anything I throw at this thing at 1080p. The only game I've played that has really significantly bottlenecked this thing is Starcraft II (due to it only being optimized for 4 cores), and things never really reach the point of unplayability even when the action gets crazy.
I love the hell out of this thing, and highly recommend to anybody else looking to save quite a few bucks on their CPU without sacrificing performance.
I opened up AMD Overdrive to see how this thing runs, and I noticed that in really CPU-intensive applications, the turbo boost seems to peak around 3.8 GHz on each core. Not sure what the issue is here. Not exactly a huge problem since it's an unlocked multiplier, meaning you're free to manually set it as high as you want, but just seems odd.
Overall, very satisfied with this CPU. You can obviously do a fair amount better with Intel, but not without paying nearly double the price.
