This review is from: areca ARC-1222 PCIe x8 SATA / SAS RAID Card
RAID 6, plenty of configuration options. The http management utility is nice, and the Ethernet port on the back makes it even more useful. The price is reasonable for what you are getting.
Check the drive compatability chart on the manufacturer's website before purchasing this card and/or drives to go with it. Consumer-level drives are a total no-go unless you can disable TLER (or its equivalent). Even enterprise-class drives can have issues, though. I got a reasonable deal on eight Samsung F3R HE103SJ drives (specified as suitable for RAID), and still had problems. I eventually discovered that they will work if you disable NCQ and use 150 MBps SATA, but that makes the performance worse than a single decent disk.
On another note, my card was having intermittent CPU 1.2v undervolts (this is apparently a known problem on some v1.2a cards, and typically locks up the machine). While the support information on their website is not great, after email contact was established, I received a new card in about one week. It probably could have happened within about five days had I been able to prepare the RMA form during business hours and been willing to pay for overnight shipping of the defective card.
All-in-all, I may or may not buy another Areca card when I need a new RAID solution. Had I read more about other people's snags with this model, I may have had a better experience. I do find it annoying that they do not seem to try to go for a wide variety of disk compatibility or fix issues like that with firmware updates.
