4 out of 5 eggs Great basic but solid NAS that is a little slow. 11/28/2013

This review is from: Lenovo 70A69003NA Diskless System Iomega ix2 Network Storage 2-bay

Pros:

This is a nice solid NAS box that seems to be very reliable and just sits next to my desk and chugs away nicely. I have yet to have any glitches or hiccups in it's functionality.

Cons:

When setting it up I found two things that annoyed me about this NAS. The first is how it handles failed drives. When I first set this up one of my HDD's that I ordered with it was DOA when I went to install them in the NAS the NAS just operated really slow and didn't give me any indication that the HDD was bad. How I finally ended up determining that the HDD was bad was by removing it from the NAS and installing it in my PC and testing it in windows. Once I got the replacement drive the NAS was happy and worked with no issues. If Lenovo simply added HDD monitoring into the NAS (SMART data would be great) it would have been a much simpler and less frustrating issue. After the NAS was initialized I did try pulling a HDD in the RAID array and it handled that very well so I hope this was simply a setup inconvenience.

In addition to the poor handling my only other complaint is the transfer speed of the unit. writing data to the NAS maxes out at about 35MB/s (45 with jumbo frames enabled) with the NAS CPU pegged at 100%. This means that the NAS box has far to slow of a CPU to be able to provide the speeds I was hoping for. I was able to read data off the drive significantly faster however with the read speed being 75MB/s which isn't stunning but is a respectable number.

Other Thoughts:

Overall I am happy with this NAS.This is a very barebones box so don't expect to have any of the apps that some other brands have, or blazing fast transfer speeds (40MB/s write and 75MB/s read). If you are fine with these limitations and want a simple NAS box for storing files It is will worth the price.
