Better than Advertised 12/05/2013
-Lots of 'Chrome Browser Extension' apps
-Gaining more and more Native apps(that run without the browser like other OS's have.)
-Going to sleep and waking up is immediate(BYE BYE Windows' "Preparing to Shut down' and 'Logging you in' waiting lines).
-Built in Google Docs applications(Document editor, spreadsheet editor, and presentation software) can open and edit Microsoft Office documents and are as full featured as most businesses will need for document work.
Chome Web Store is chock full of free apps, download and install is so easy it makes Windows 7 look like JUNK, and some of these apps are REALLY good. For ones that aren't, hey, you paid nothing.
You can easily do WORK and PLAY on this device. My job uses classic 'WinTel' infrastructure(Microsoft software and Dell/HP/Intel hardware). I have used my ChromeBook to access our Outlook Web Access portal to get my corporate email and to VPN into my work laptop.
I can and do work from home on a <$ 200 device that runs NO MICROSOFT SOFTWARE. Do NOT believe people who tell you this can't be done; it's as easy to do on this device as it is on my Windows Laptop.
-Very litte. Full (1080P) HD videos on YouTube are choppy, always. However 720P videos are choppy never, so basic HD is still doable, and at this price and these specs, this is expected.
-No 3d accelleration(again, at this price, thats a given so no eggs off).
Within a few days of using this, it became my primary laptop computer.
My Core i7-based Windows 7 laptop(>$700) is faster, but not really any more useful, and NOT as fun to use.
Right away I was blown away by how much MORE Chrome OS does than what information is out there.
Most all information(including reviews of these devices, and even the Chrome OS Wikipedia page, is OUTDATED AND WRONG.
'Chrome OS relies on Chrome browser extensions to run applications'. NOT TRUE. More and more apps for Google Chrome run right off the desktop without the browser, just like any other OS. And Google is highlighting these Native Apps in the Chrome Web Store.
Also untrue out there: 'Chrome OS really does nothing without a Wi-Fi connection'. First, turn off your Internet Connection on your Windows based machine. Tell me how often you run into things you can't do. It's VERY often. It's the same with a ChromeBook: Most every app WORKS FINE without an Internet Connection, but most every app WORKS BETTER with one.
I love this thing. I bought it as a cheap experiment, thinking Google's Chrome OS wasn't ready yet. What I found is that for most everything, Google Chrome OS is here to stay.
