Could have been great 12/20/2013
As a router / AP, it appears to work fine.
I had high hopes for this router. I have a main router, the RT-AC66U. My plan was to use the RT-N56U as a wireless repeater. I've gone through the support pages, forums, etc... and spent the time to type up my configuration (on both routers) and get ASUS tech support to help out. It's been over a week since I first contacted tech support, and I'm no closer to an answer. The only suggestion they had was to use the AC66U as the repeater. This solution doesn't work well for me, and the N56U is advertised to work as a repeater. Although it misses the mark on having this functionality as an optional 'mode'. I'm really disappointed. Nearly $300 on both routers and tech support has been worthless.
We apologize that you did not get the help you needed from our technical support. Please be aware, we do not advertise the RT-N56U to feature a universal repeater mode.
The RT-N56U features WDS, which is similar to repeater mode, but has some limitations in speed and is not widely compatible. For your combination of RT-AC66U (which features repeater mode) and your RT-N56U, you will not be able to use WDS between these models due to different chipsets.
If you choose to keep these two models for your desired configuration, the only possible solution is to change your RT-N56U to router mode and RT-AC66U to repeater mode. Switching the roles of the two units, while would be ideal, is not possible. I apologize for the inconvenience this has caused, and I hope this helps clear any confusion.
