Pleasantly Surprised! 12/29/2013
This review is from: KEF FiveTwo Series MDL7 SAT BLK 5 CH Speaker System, Black Pair
Imaging, small size, effectively replaces 5 boxes with 2, beautiful finish (with wife approval) and attractive stands, shockingly low price on sale, easy setup, great dynamic range
Shiny surface shows fingerprints, limited bass response (esp. around 100-150 Hz) , basic instruction manual doesn't explain best placement, surround effects don't/can't reach back & far sides of room, combined connection cables may limit some setup configurations, small gauge wires
I was fully prepared to dislike these cute little boxes. However, I was pleasantly surprised! First, thanks to KEF's Uni-Q drivers, imaging is razor sharp. While I still use my Martin Logan electrostatics for serious stereo listening, these little gems effectively eliminate the need for a center channel and side 'surrounds.' (I still use rears for effective 7.1 setup, however.) I recommend setting up with a tight, accurate powered subwoofer, and letting these speakers 'break in' for a couple of days. Then, be prepared for enjoyable theater sound with minimal fuss, reduced hardware & wife approval!
By the way, I highly recommend spacing these speakers fairly wide apart & aiming the primary drivers directly at the listening position. This allows for the best phantom center effect, and allows the surround to be essentially inaudible directly - heard only by reflection from the room's boundaries.
Conclusion: if they're on sale (and you want lovely theater sound with minimum fuss), buy 'em!
