- 10000 RPM 32MB Cache
- SATA 6.0Gb/s
Progression Review 01/13/2014
Much, much Faster than a standard 7200 rpm (sata III) disc. Boot time from power on to actual use is still less than 60 secs. Write (copy) over 360 Mbs, My old standard 7200 rpm drive was 130 Mbs (copy). After 4 years of use as my primary drive it is still very fast, quiet and keeps cool. I will not replace with a solid state drive until this one gives out. By then I think they (ssd's) will be even cheaper. Also perfect size (GB's) for a primary HD. Like they say... If it ain't broke, then don't fix it! Overall I'm still very happy with the WD Velocraptor.
It's not a solid state drive. Not as fast, or quiet, not sure about heat on ssd's. Average ssd (sata III) boasts 480 Mbs write speed. So, my WD velociraptor has very good bench marks, much higher than a a standard 7200 and not far behind a ssd.
My unit was a bit more expensive at the time I bought it ($160.00, 4 yrs ago).
If I were to build a new PC today, I would definitely go with a SSD. As you would be able to buy a 120-180 GB ssd drive for the same price or a few more bucks.
