I'll still buy WD 01/21/2014
Worked well, until.....
Failed after ~1.5 years. I used to buy a mix of WD and Seagate, but I've come to the conclusion that Seagate has more reliability issues than WD. This drive died a slow death. If I had a bit more time in the 2 weeks leading up to the crash I might have been able to save a lot of time recovering data.
I'm about to do a warranty RMA. WD warranties are good.
I was using it primarily as a backup drive but I did have a bit of data that I hadn't backed up in a while due to building/transferring files from a new build. I had roughly 300GB that I wanted to recover. I was able to recover it all but copying took around 5 days (but it did copy!)
I'll still buy WD, but this particular drive didn't last. I have a pair of 200GB WD's that have been going strong for over 7 years. Bigger drives, bigger problems. Better do a good job of keeping backups.
