GS70 STEALTH - Great machine with a few issues... 02/03/2014
Ultra thin, if you travel, then this is the machine for you.
4 x USB 3.0 ports. Considering some systems still do a weird mash up of 2.0 and 3.0 ports, it's nice to finally have a system that has gone completely 3.0
NVIDIA 765M GTX 2 GB GDDR5 - While not as powerful as the 780M, it can crank out the CUDA cores when it comes to gaming. Case in point, Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Enhanced Edition. The Series 7 I own has a 650M 2 GB GDDR5 video card. However, the system would slow to a crawl when maxing out every graphical detail, especially with the anti-aliasing option. Yet on the GTX765M, I can max out every graphical option, and the game flows smoothly with no issues at all.
256 GB SSD/1 TB HDD - Boot up times are extremely fast, while the 1 TB HDD is good enough to host most of your games, music and videos.
16 GB RAM - I haven't ran into too many games that require this much RAM. However, when doing video editing, my editing programs scream with this much system RAM. Never had a program crash while editing 1080P video files.
Screen is ok, but I felt it could of been better. I also have a 17 inch Samsung Series 7 CHRONOS, and it feels that the screen on that system was better than what MSI used. Like I said, it's not a bad screen, just feels it could of been a bit better.
Sound - I felt this could of been better. Once again, when comparing to the Series 7 I own, the sound sounded better on the Series 7 than the GS70. The Series 7 has JBL speakers and subwoofer, so the system can kick out some serious sound. Meanwhile, MSI decided to use the Sound Blaster Cinema Software solution for their audio needs. While it's good, it's just not as good as I think it could of been. However, when hooked up with some high quality headphones, the sound is great.
Trackpad - Trackpad is pretty much useless on this machine. Honestly, it's probably the worst trackpad I've used, when compared to the Series 7, and the Retina Macbook Pro that I own. They really need to go back to the drawing board on that one.
Stuck keys - Not sure if it's just an issue with my machine, but the space bar key is touchy. Most of the time, I have to forcefully push on the key in order to get it to work. Otherwise, I've had no other issues with the keyboard.
Software driver support - Ok, so this really drove me nuts. In order to update the drivers for the system, you have to go to the main MSI Global site, find the GS70, and then download the drivers. From what I can tell, there is no internal software program where you push a button, your driver updates are listed, and away you go. Even worse, when looking at the latest driver updates, the information on them are sparse. Most of the time, their website will just give a short vague description on what it is. Take their latest "Utility" update on their site. It's title is "Boot Configure". That is literally all it says. Thus installing the BIOS and driver updates are like playing Russian Roulette. The updates are there, but with little information on what you are installing, you won't know if it is something you really need, or should be completely skipped, or worse, could potentially brick your system.
Thus far, since I've owned the GS70 since August 2013, I've had no major issues with it. I've been able to run many games on it, have Office 2013 installed and running with no issues at all. Video editing with programs like Sony Vegas are a breeze with the 1TB HDD and 16 GB of RAM.
Would I recommend this to others? Yes, if you are looking for a machine that is slim, portable, and ready to play some of the latest games out there. However, as I have written above, the system does have some issues, and if you are willing to get past them, then you will be able to handle nearly anything you load up on it.
