Great Card, Crummy Cooler 03/03/2014
This card was a pretty good value when I bought it a year ago. It's been put through the gauntlet and runs almost anything cranked up, even with my dated (Phenom II X6 1055T) CPU bottle-necking some games.
The heat sink shroud buzzes terribly, since very shortly after I bought it. I removed the shroud probably <6 months in, and then the fan bearing went. The card ran fairly hot to begin with, as do most ATI cards, but the heatsink setup on this card was poor to begin with.
Overall, it's a good card, and I'm working on a custom cooling setup, but I have a frustration with graphics cards' terrible cooling systems, a great deal of the time. The best solution seems to be a blower type fan that sends everything straight out the back of the case without fuss. The design on this GPU, like many others, blows the air both toward the back and front of the case, and up against the metal backplate. This obviously doesn't dissipate heat well, so the card runs hotter as a result. Why not blow it all out the back, and have a fully enclosed shroud?
Thank you for the positive review. The fan designs are engineering choices far beyond my involvement.
