Is this western Digital? 04/03/2014
I have had a 50% usable rate out of the box! Three of the first four worked, and the replacement s replacements will be here soon. And I’m sure it will work.. three of them are still working. I have only read of failures out of the box so if there good they should be OK
I am a SAN engineer and work mainly with enterprise class equipment, WD and Seagate are my choice for drives. So for a small home NAS I went with a consumer grade drive by a trusted brand. The WD red drives, yes they are slower than a standalone drive but there meant to be used in in RAID stripes and the more drives the more read and write heads so speed is not an issue. I am using 4 bay NAS I could go on about the problems the first drive caused. if you are to use these drives buy eight drives if you need fore and send back the dead ones and you might be up and running or get Seagates.
With my 30 + years in computers, yes the Z-80 chip. Western Digital was king, starting with the Winchester drives. But if this an indication of the direction of W/D. They have gone the way of JENSON and Zenith they use to be the best, but the company got sold and they prostituted the good name and sold low end stuff at high end prices until the name was good no more. I would switch drives but I will on the next refreash.
