Sturdy and fully featured 04/26/2014
This review is from: EnGenius EGS2108P 8-Port Gigabit PoE Smart Switch with 4 PoE Ports
This smart switch is very sturdy both in how it was built and in how it was programmed. I set up a few tests to push it to the breaking point and it performed well. This smart switch also comes with a lot of features that businesses could find very useful such as:
Trunking (bind multiple physical ports into one logical connection to increase bandwidth)
Port Mirroring (transmit a copy of specific ports data to another port for monitoring/diagnostics)
Loopback Detection (turn off a port when a loop in the network is detected and flooding the network with data)
Storm Control (prevent too much broadcast data from clogging the network, also has a threshold configuration)
And of course, POE.
I found a bit of an issue with the hardware. If power is lost and restored quickly, the unit will not power on. I found that I could flip the power switch fast and on occasion, the power light would not come back on and it wouldn't work. I had to turn it off, wait and turn it back on. This is not good for if the power browns-out in a thunderstorm or other conditions. It would require someone to find the switch, and manually power-cycle it. That is why I took off an egg.
Overall, this is an excellent switch. It can power on and start handling traffic in about 15 seconds with a basic configuration. It can withstand heavy traffic loads, it is full of great features you would need in a switch.
