Thrustmaster TX 05/11/2014
This review is from: THRUSTMASTER TX Racing Wheel Ferrari 458 Italia Edition
The force feedback felt very immersive and proper in Forza 5, as well as on several PC games such as Formula 1 2013 and Assetto Corsa.
I dare say this wheel base is the best force feedback to date and Forza 5 has the best FFB programmed into a racing game, making it the perfect match for each other.
The mounting system is quite flexible, easily clamped onto my computer table securely. It also features threaded inserts on the wheel base and pedals for mounting to a cockpit or wheel stand.
Vehicle handling in any racing game is dramatically better than using a controller, since you have 900° of rotation to work with rather than 1/2" of movement for a full wheel rotation with a controller.
Adjustable DOF comes in very useful since I can drop it down to proper spec for F1 racing or get it set to match steering in DiRT 3.
The wheel that comes with the set (Ferrari 458 wheel) is a grand touring wheel, which is meant for comfortable cruising down the highway. That means in racing scenario, it's not practical for high speed maneuvering and can cause you to lose a proper grip while turning. A round wheel is much better than the way this wheel is shaped.
When I initially took the wheel out of the box, I felt sick to my stomach because the wheel was all plastic and felt like a child's toy. Not something for a grown man to own and have any dignity.
There is a "gear" feeling when turning the wheel, which it shouldn't have since it's belt driven and electric motor.
This wheel has been out for 5 months, and there still isn't any sign of the pedals and shiftier add-ons being available for purchase.
I have a slightly negative feeling on the pedals as well. They have good resistance and are accurate, but they seem a bit cheap. Thrustmaster also limited themselves from having a clutch pedal since a Ferrari 458 doesn't have one so to keep with the theme, it's not there. Also doesn't help that the pedals that do have a clutch are still unavailable for purchase 5 months after this wheel has been released.
I returned mine until Thrustmaster can come up with a better combination of wheel rim and pedals to go with this great wheel base, or perhaps sell the wheel base separately. You can get better pedals and better rim for racing as "add ons", but it's wasted money owning the 458 wheel and pedals since they would sit in the box never used.
I do miss having this wheel set for Forza 5, however the 458 set isn't good for racing. Thrustmaster should have gone with a generic styled wheel that was round, and pedals which had a clutch pedal. Having to spend hundreds more dollars to remedy those two things is too much to ask for.
I'm leaving this product with a 3 egg "neutral" review since the wheel base is great, but the execution of making it themed off a touring car hurts driving performance in racing.
