Great drive 05/23/2014
This review is from: Seagate ST4000VX000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Surveillance Hard Drive
Drives are being made for specific needs now days. Sure all hard drives accomplish the same thing, but there are now drives engineered for specific tasks and can squeeze out just a little more performance or reliability.
This drive has good indicators that it will perform well as a surveillance system hard drive. It spins at a lower rate reducing mechanical wear, it has a 64MB cache so it isn't always cycling the heads between active and park modes (depending on the system it is integrated into). And it offers a lot of storage for video. Many systems have higher resolution and framerates, thus they need more storage to hold the same amount of time.
Drive also has the ability to limit the amount of current it consumes at spin-up to 2 Amps. This is a great feature for systems that use many drives. Having many drives spin up all at the same time can create a large load on the power supply.
After being formatted to NTFS, windows reports 3.63 TB usable by the user. The drive has an average transfer rate of about 158MB/s.
Not many to report. However, after seeing some of the thinner drives around, this one looks a little thick. The specifications say it is 1.028in max. Just make sure you have good cooling if you are mounting alot of these close together. "Allow a minimum clearance of 0.03in around the entire perimeter of the drive for cooling."
4TB is a lot of data. If you are using this for storage, please be sure to replicate critical information in multiple places. 4TB is a lot of data to lose in case of failure.
