This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS 3.5" 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Retail Packaging
Pros:
Appears to have good reliability based on other reviews, real vibration sensor based feedback system unlike other low cost NAS drive brands like Western Digital, suitable for install in multi-bay (4+) NAS systems . 7200 RPM speed vs 5900 or less for a lot of other brands' NAS drives.
Cons:
Significantly louder than a lower RPM seagate drive I had been using, about 10F hotter in my Synology NAS encolsure, and with a couple of watts (2-3) higher power draw. I didn't realize this, but even though it is listed as a bare drive, the drive came in the retail box. I was expecting the new super fancy newegg method of shipping bare hard drives, but it came in a standard box with some air cushions wrapped around the retail box. Seems ok since the drive seems fine, I was just a bit surprised at the packing method based on what I was expecting.
Overall Review:
If the reliability pans out, this looks like it could be a real winner. Higher rotational speed will give better performance for those that need it. Personally, I don't need that extra speed for my application and would probably have been ok with a slower drive, but as long as it holds up in the long term I'm fine with that.
