AMD power and price 01/05/2015
This review is from: AMD FX-8350 Black Edition Vishera 8-Core 4.0 GHz (4.2 GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+ 125W FD8350FRHKBOX Desktop Processor
Pros:
It's a great chip. I finally caught it on sale again for 139 and descended like a vulture. At that price you just can't pass this chip up. I ran a PhenomII 965 for years before upgrading to a 4350, and that chip was a powerhouse too. It's sad that this is the end of the line for "true" CPUs. Get it while you still can.
Cons:
It likes power. No, really, it likes a LOT of power. which means it's going to run hot. I knew this going in so it's not really a con, but something you will want to be prepared for. You'll need a decent cooler. Evo 212 does the job, but it's a beast to fit in even gaming cases that are a few years old (I have the first gen Storm Scout and I had to remove a panel fan to fit it).
However, if you plan to invest in this 8 core chip, respect it and get it the cooling it deserves. Get a good block or go water.
Overall Review:
I'm going to miss CPUs. Sure APUs are cute, but I'm old fashioned and like the separation of tasks. Let my CPU be a CPU and my GPU be a GPU. I wish AMD would stay in the gaming business and not worry about copying every little thing that Intel does, but that's the way business works now. One company makes something that is moderately successful and all of a sudden every device on the planet has to have a tablet interface.
