5 out of 5 eggs Excellent headphones... 02/08/2015

This review is from: SteelSeries Siberia Elite Headset

Pros:

Really nice 7.1 surround while playing games like FarCry4.

Lots of optional connections for PC, Tablets, TV, etc.

Great sound when listening to music.

Extra long cable when using the extension.

The lighted volume and mic on/off switches are a nice touch, especially the ability to change colors and themes.

Software has a well organized user interface and get regular updates.

Cons:

No need to worry about blowing out your eardrums using the required USB 7.1 soundcard. I really was quite surprised how quiet these are running through USB versus connecting to computers headphone/microphone jacks.

No ability to connect directly to computers soundcard unless you just want standard 2.0 stereo sound. Surround sound requires the supplied USB soundcard.

Got a little uncomfortable after 4+ hours of gaming. That's probably not a con...more of a "stop playing games for so long" issue.

Instructions are a bit sparse. They are just 8 pages of pictures which left a lot to be desired. For something this expensive, I want a big thick users manual full of specs.

Overall Review:

I really don't know a lot about circumaural headsets but have always wanted to try a set. My wife wouldn't be happy with me if I ran speakers all over the room to have surround sound while playing games. I was really impressed with these. I honestly had to take them off multiple times because I kept hearing noises coming from behind me and had me thinking that someone was sneaking up on me or breaking into the house. Really freaked me out at times which means that SteelSeries accomplished their goal with these. It's hard to go back to just stereo after using these in a game.

To be honest I can't see any other reason to buy these unless you're a gamer. They are nice headphones for listening to music but too big/bulky for standard stereo. There are other cheaper options if you just want to listen to music. Some of the reviews on here have been pretty hard on mid-range, bass, etc. but I'm not an audio aficionado, just an average person and I was blown away with the sound.

For the size of the headphones, it would be nice if there was a way to connect these directly to my soundcard...and by that I mean: Have a way to plug these into the back of the computer directly into my soundcards jacks which includes center, front left/right, rear left/right, side left/right, and subwoofer jacks. Include the processor inside the headphones to do any sounds splitting required. Maybe I'm nuts but this option would have really made these an A+.

I've owned quite a few SteelSeries products and these were just as impressive as all the other hardware. Good job, SteelSeries.
