4 out of 5 eggs One of the most interesting routers I have seen 08/30/2016

This review is from: Google Wi-Fi Router by TP-Link - OnHub AC1900 (Managed by Google Wi-Fi APP)

Pros:

This has got to be one of the most interesting routers I have looked at in a long time. First, there is no browser setup interface (you have to use your phone or an android device). It does support Blue Tooth (wow never seen that before) and it does both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands.

Speed and Range it competed really well against a Linksys EA8500 and a Linksys WRT1900ACS. The only problem is I can’t tell you what the speeds are against the 2.4Ghz bands (look at con section).

This device is designed for people who are not tech savvy. The settings are very simple and everything is setup for you by google. Their default settings worked great and I did not have to change anything.

WRT1900ACS (5Ghz)
Download 82.31
Upload 74.08

EA8500 (5Ghz)
Download 82.92
Upload 89.38

OnHub (5Ghz)
Download 82.27
Upload 86.02

For tech savvy people the “If This Do This” abilities are a very nice addition. Even if you are not tech savvy but can follow simple instructions you can setup a lot of things in your home using this functionality. This is something completely knew to me and I have never seen anything like it on any other router. First thought I had with this feature is when my daughter comes home from school she sometimes forgets to call me to tell me she got home ok. With this device I can have it send me an email that she got home.
All of my tests were on Verizon FIOS internet connection at 75/75Mbps Download/Upload.

It supports 1 USB 3.0 port (However it is not colored blue as is standard with 3.0 ports).

Cons:

Although I love the fact I really did not have to do anything to the router to get this running I am disappointed there is no “Advanced” menu options so I can tinker with the settings more.

Wi-Fi network name between 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands is exactly the same and you can’t tell the difference as OnHub determines which one you connect to.

No Media server (No FTP or VPN either), I have grown to love the media server for hosting all my family videos, pictures and music.

One LAN port, however you can just by a NetGear hub which will solve the problem.

Overall Review:

This device is fantastic for people who have no knowledge of how routers work and want things simple and setup very well.

Setup was less than 5 minutes!
