What is an Ultrabook?

The Ultrabook concept, spearheaded by Intel, is essentially the next step in the evolution of netbooks. A netbooks is a small, lightweight laptop that has been created with portability in mind. An Ultrabook improves upon the netbook by giving users a more complete computing experience. These slim pieces of machinery also come packed with high-powered features, so you don’t have to sacrifice performance for portability and style.

Next-generation ultrabooks

To actually qualify as an Ultrabook, a PC must meet certain Intel quality standards for speed and processing power. In addition to being lightweight like its netbook predecessor, an Ultrabook must be thin. Most weigh less than three pounds and are under an inch thick when closed. Also, the high-definition resolution of an Ultrabook is superior to most monitors available today.

The everlasting battery

A short charge is the bane of every laptop user's existence. To combat poor performance and running time, Intel requires ultrabooks to feature at least five hours of battery life.

An all-day battery would be a dream come true for most consumers. Currently, the best ultrabooks offer about eight hours of battery life, which would be particularly convenient for users who can't constantly recharge their devices. For instance, college students and traveling businesspeople won't have to worry about their laptops if Intel keeps its promise.

Touchscreen may be the future

Ultrabooks and tablets are strong competitors among the tech industry mainly because the devices share a great deal of similarities. Both machines are convenient for mobile use and allow users to complete basic tasks. The biggest difference between tablets and ultrabooks is their software. Tablets run on mobile operating systems like Android and iOS, while ultrabooks feature Windows 7. With Windows 8, however, the gap between the gadgets might close completely.

The next-generation of ultrabooks will look completely different from today's computers. Technological innovations and increased performance standards will force manufacturers to build high-quality laptops. If computers with all-day battery life, touchscreen capabilities and 1080p resolution become the standard, then it's difficult to imagine that there are further improvements that manufacturers could make.
