GIGABYTE GA-X79-UP4 LGA 2011 Intel X79 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

2 out of 5 eggs Continuation of previous review 01/15/2014

This review is from: GIGABYTE GA-X79-UP4 LGA 2011 Intel X79 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Lots of connectivity and performs well

Cons: In my last review I commented on the lack of support you will receive if you purchase this board. After writing the review, Newegg sent me an email with the support number for Gigabyte. Thank you Gigabyte!

The only way you can get the support number is to write a negative review! I called support and explained the issue with the screen saver and the NIC card when overclocked. They promptly sent me a link to the newest beta version of the BIOS (F5b). The BIOS upgrade corrected the screen saver issue but it did not fix the NIC speed issue. Subsequent correspondence with tech support follows "If there are issue without any overclocking being applied we can have our
team look into it however once any overclocking is being applied results cannot
be guarantee."

The Gigabyte support # is 16268549338

Other Thoughts: Don't buy this board if you think overclocking is going to make your computer faster. It is already faster than you are at the default settings!

Gigabyte should stop advertising the overclocking feature if they aren't going to support even the most basic overclocking options in EasyTune6.

2 out of 5 eggs Think twice before buying Gigabyte products 01/11/2014

This review is from: GIGABYTE GA-X79-UP4 LGA 2011 Intel X79 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: The board right out of the box works well and performance is as expected. Good value but plan on doing a lot of work to update drivers and install software.

Cons: Support! Support is almost non-existent. Sure, you can ask a support question but don't expect an answer from a knowledgeable person. You will need support! Upgrades to the BIOS will break things. They don't even publish an issues list so that you can avoid the problems that their faulty software will introduce. Do not upgrade to F4 if you like the Windows screen saver. Make sure that you write down all of the BIOS settings before you upgrade so that you can reenter them after the upgrade and don't turn on the Ultra Fast boot if you want your keyboard to work during the boot process and don't overclock unless you want your network speed to max out a about 2mb on a 1gb interface. And don't install and uninstall the 3TB+ software unless you want to get errors in the system log because the uninstall program didn't totally uninstall the software.

Other Thoughts: Given what I know now after living with Gigabyte product for over a year, I would think hard before buying more of their products. The MB works well but don't change or upgrade the firmware unless you have absolutely no choice.

1 out of 5 eggs NIC won't support Gbs ethernet 02/04/2013

This review is from: GIGABYTE GA-X79-UP4 LGA 2011 Intel X79 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Fits well in a Fractal Design R4 case, performs as expected, lots of Sata connections, great overall MOBO

Cons: Built-in Network Interface Card (Intel 82579LM) does not support Gbs speed. If you set the link speed to Auto Negotiate, it runs as 100Mbs, if you set it to 1000Mbs, it stops working altogether. All drivers are current. All other computers connected to the Netgear switch run at 1Gbs. Not sure if the hardware is defective or if there is a driver problem. Manufacturer's have not provided an answer.

Other Thoughts: Intel's support response to the problem was "contact the OEM", Gigabytes reply was "connect directly to the modem". Both companies provided non-answers so keep this in mind before you purchase their products. Also note that Gigabyte and Intel do not have a phone number you can call for support. I'll update this review when I have more information.
