Most Favorable Review

Good looking, easy to use enclosure

macally PHR-100SU Aluminum 3.5" SATA USB & eSATA External Enclosure
macally PHR-100SU Aluminum 3.5" SATA USB & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: SATA inside and out, with USB 2 available as a fallback. Comes with SATA and USB cables. Very sleek enclosure at a decent price.

Cons: Provided SATA to SATA cable with eSATA adapter - would prefer a SATA to eSATA cable.

Overall Review: I bought this and a Seagate Barracuda SATA drive at the same time. Installation is a snap - LOVE the SATA cable (as opposed to IDE). I've bought MacAlly enclosures before, and they are consistently good quality.

Good, but with tradeoffs

GPI Ledplux 7 Watt A19 LED Light Bulb Cool White 5000K - UL Listed
GPI Ledplux 7 Watt A19 LED Light Bulb Cool White 5000K - UL Listed

Pros: Consistent light, low energy usage, no flicker, seem much brighter than advertised

Cons: very cold (in appearance) white light

Overall Review: If you want no flicker, low cost, long lasting bulbs in a location where the color temperature doesn't matter much - these are a good choice. But I wouldn't use these in a reading lamp or in any situation where the stark white light will distract you. Inside a sconce or a lampshade would work well, since those are generally going to affect the color somewhat.

Amazing television even if you don't care about 3D

LG LW5600 series 47" 1080p 120Hz LED-LCD HDTV 47LW5600
LG LW5600 series 47" 1080p 120Hz LED-LCD HDTV 47LW5600

Pros: We purchased this model when the sale price dropped to within 50-60 dollars of the 2D-only 47LV5500. We don't really care about 3D, but the contrast ratios are higher for this model (thanks to local dimming) and the HD picture quality is simply superb. This smart television comes with a USB wifi dongle, but it also has a built-in Cat 5 ethernet port for a wired connection if you're so inclined (as I am). We've only taken advantage of a couple of the built-in smart apps; but the Netflix app's interface is as good as any I've seen (probably "better than any" would be more accurate), and the Plex client works very well if you have your own streaming video library - you just need to download the free Plex Media Server and install it on the computer that holds your videos/music.

Cons: This TV's picture is so much better than other television I've seen that I can't stand to watch anything on another television - I'm too spoiled. Also, it's too thin to put a Wii sensor bar on top - you'll need to set it at the bottom of the television. Actually, to be serious - when you first power on the television the built-in apps can take 5-10 seconds to initially load. This can be a minor annoyance if you're turning it on to watch a Netflix movie. After the initial delay in loading, though, everything works great.

Overall Review: This is a superb HD television even if you never plan to watch anything in 3D. It comes with four pairs of 3D glasses; it comes with a wifi adapter; it's ridiculously thin and light.

No regrets

Zoom 5341-02-00G Cable Modem Ethernet Port DOCSIS 3.0
Zoom 5341-02-00G Cable Modem Ethernet Port DOCSIS 3.0

Pros: Inexpensive DOCSIS 3.0 modem Fast Low Profile

Cons: None so far

Overall Review: With Comcast charging $7 per month to rent their low-end modem, it makes financial sense to buy your own. I'm not on one of Comcast's high-end tiers; but even so have seen significant boosts (50% or higher, both up and down) boosts in my speed test results over what I used to get with the old Comcast Surfboard modem. You can buy DOCSIS 2 modems for about half this price; but DOCSIS 3 is backwards compatible so there's no harm in buying against the future with this modem. I've only been using the Zoom 5341 for a couple weeks, so I can't speak to its reliability.

Died in under a year

WD My Book Home 500GB USB 2.0 / Firewire400 / eSATA 3.5" External Hard Drive WDH1CS5000N
WD My Book Home 500GB USB 2.0 / Firewire400 / eSATA 3.5" External Hard Drive WDH1CS5000N

Pros: Drive seems quiet; was plug and play on the Mac (which should be the norm anyway but isn't always due to manufacturer silliness)

Cons: I recommended this to my mom for use as a backup disk with her iMac. The drive died after about six months. While it would be under warranty, mom can't find the receipt or order info - so I can't speak to the quality of Western Digital's repair/warranty service. Incidentally this is why I'm giving this two stars instead of one, since it's possible WD has stellar repair service.

Overall Review: Since she's out the money anyway, I'm recommending she replace this with a LaCie external disk. I've owned a half dozen of those over the past few years, and have never had a problem.

Good for the money

Acer 19" WSXGA+ LCD Monitor 5 ms 1680 x 1050 D-Sub, DVI X193W+BD
Acer 19" WSXGA+ LCD Monitor 5 ms 1680 x 1050 D-Sub, DVI X193W+BD

Pros: Good price, sharp and bright, higher resolution than many other 19" monitors, seems responsive, attractive

Cons: Very non-intuitive controls that are badly designed, no printed manual, sits quite low with no ability to raise/lower it (you can tilt it though)

Overall Review: The price is really why I gave this a "4 egg" rating. Frankly the controls are - by far - the worst I've ever seen on an LCD monitor. Normally I wouldn't care less about the lack of a printed manual; but for the first time in my life I found it necessary to look up how to use a monitor's controls.
